I honestly do not know what to make of the lawsuit involving Victoria Osteen, wife of famed pastor Joel Osteen, a man whom I love to hear preach. Sharon Brown, Continental flight attendant is accusing her of committing some very unchristian-like behavior. Mrs Osteen is accused, in a civil lawsuit, of assaulting Ms. Brown before the start of a December 2005 flight from Houston to Vail, CO
Brown alleged Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast during an outburst over a wet stain on her first-class seat. Victoria voluntarily paid the $3000 fine by the Federal Aviation Administration for interfering with a crew member to be able to put the incident behind she and her family.
Here is the problem I have with Ms. Brown. It seems as though she wants an apology and punitive damages amounting to 10 percent of the Osteen's net worth as part of her lawsuit. Why the hell doe you need 10 percent of this woman's net worth?? This amounts nothing more to an old-school shake-down to me. I am confidant our judicial system will not allow this woman to get 10 percent of the Osteen's net worth. It is appalling that this lawsuit has honestly gotten this far.
I watched a courtroom clip of both women yesterday and Ms. Brown was grinning from ear to ear and walking into court with such swagger, that it is quite obvious she could never be compared to being a "victim" as she has portrayed herself out to be. It is sad we tie up our legal system with frivolous lawsuits as this. Had this been a poor person, I am confidant there would never have been a civil lawsuit. Bottom line, it is all about the money.
A 12-person jury was seated Wednesday after lawyers spent several hours questioning a pool of 130 people. The question touched religious beliefs, celebrity and public's perception of preachers and televangelists. Many of those in the jury said they had been to Lakewood Church and acknowledged holding the Osteens in high regard and being somewhat star-struck. I have met Joel Osteen socially but have never met his wife or been to their church.
According to an FAA report, which the judge would not allow since it was incomplete, claimed Victoria Osteen pushed past Brown in an attempt to get to the plane's cockpit after two other attendants had not cleaned a liquid on her armrest. Brown's suit claims the attendants asked to have Osteen removed from the flight. Victoria Osteen's lawyer, powerhouse Rusty Hardin, said that his client and her entire family left voluntarily. The incident delayed the flight two hour.
Brown had previously claimed she was attacked in another incident by an airport employee, according to a statement she gave under oath. This seems to be her modus operandi --- filing lawsuits.
This was the kicker for me: According to court documents, Brown claims that she suffers anxiety and hemorrhoids because of the incident involving Victoria Osteen and said her faith has been affected. She is suing Osteen for all her medical expenses and counseling.
Again, this is a classic shake-down of a rich person. This, is a true waste of tax payers dollars. If Victoria Osteen slapped this woman, then pay some money, but certainly not 10 percent of her net worth.
Breaking news: plaintiff Pharaoh has sued Moses--claiming the defendant became belligerent after Pharaoh refused a demand to let people go, and the plaintiff has since been plagued with frogs, rivers of blood, and severe acne.
What would Jesus do??

I am not sure exactly what happened as I was not on the plane. However, if this is going to be splashed all over the newspaper, I think all of the facts should be revealed, i.e., what did the flight attendant ask Victoria to do? What exactly did Victoria refuse to do? Did the attendant have the authroity to make the decision to remove Victoria? Did Victoria ask to get off of the plane? Did Victoria run for the cockpit and bang on the door? Where was Joel & the children while all of this was going on? Tell all or shut up!
the only thing that is hard to understand is the fact that little mistakes a minister make will become a headline and a way to point fingers to prove that ministers really make mistakes....
please understand that a minister make mistakes as well and an imperfect person who has been saved by grace..
if in any way victoria osteens action became displeasing to others who echoe as ordinary as always, is she not worthy to be forgiven and to be understood at times...why should we keep on saying she should make a public apology?
Hey folks! she is a human being too..she is not Jesus Christ..do not just like her because she appeared cute and nice on screen...be thankful that she became a Christian..
Sadly, Ms. Osteen did not accept responsibility for her actions. She clearly had a major part in this. The posting on the website should include her acceptance of her responsibility in this matter.
As a representative of the ministry, you do not hold up a flight over spilt water.
Imagine how pissed V.O would have been when she found out there was no changing table in first class!!!
HA!!!!
(KIDDING)
I DONT ALWAYS AGREE WITH YOUR POLITICAL VIEWS BUT ONE CAN NEVER DENY YOIU ARE HILARIOUSLY WITTY. KEEP UP THE GREAT BLOG
Hemorrhoids????????????? Ohmigawsh! First off, she didn't kick her in the butt, right? Secondly, who admits this? Frivolous lawsuits really chap my rear. They could've settled out of court. If the authorities didn't feel the need to press criminal charges than I'd say she doesn't have much of a leg to stand on asking for such a judgement. I don't know much about the Osterveens but it is the husband who is the minister, not the wife, right? Victoria s most certainly in the wrong for being such an elitist brat but this flight attendant needs to know her alwsuit is over-the-top.
Ms Brown's case cannot be that important since Jesse Jackson didnt come to town and Quannel X is not by her side
First, I totally agree that this shouldn't warrant 10% of the Osteen's net worth. On a side note, the Bible is pretty clear that clergy should live lives of poverty, so to me, a rich minister is kind of an oxymoron riddled with irony.
Beyond that, as someone who worked in the service industry, I've been man handled by many rude people, rich and poor, a few of which were members of or related to the clergy. In fact, there were two incidents I probably could've filed some kind of suit, but it just never crossed my mind. By far and large, most of the customers I waited on were fantastic and I'm thankful for that period in life, for I know how I treat people in spite of my different position in life.
I don't know what happened on this flight. That's why we have a legal system. But, from what I've read on the Internet, I do think it is pretty clear that Mrs. Osteen wasn't behaving in a way she should have been considering she is wealthy because of her husband's marketing of faith.
Again, I am in no way saying that Sharon Brown deserves a big pay day, but since I haven't looked over the evidence, I don't know if she does or doesn't. I do know that whether or not it is fair, famous people are more vulnerable to these sort of lawsuits, warranted or not.
I love the Jesse Jackson and Quannel X post, that is a scream !!! Keep us posted, I want to know more about the case. Here is the scoop I heard at water aerobics from the retired Rice grads, Osteen has had other lawsuits and settled out of court. Maybe Brown was hoping for a settlement out of court. 10%, how does anyone know what that number is? I am assuming the trial started today, wonder if it is on court t.v.? Love your blog, Kristi
Love your blog ,Kristi, I found it thru Melissa Morris blog. Your daughter is precious and as the grandmother of 4, I know precious!!
As the wife of a physician, I abhore frivolous lawsuits. As the mother and mother-in-law of lawyers we have some lively discussions in our house. The shame here is that people who really deserve to sue for very good reasons are all looked at suspiciously because of nonsense suits like this. If Brown had had her teeth knocked out it would be different. The woman paid a fine and that should be that.I know that being a flt.attend. is a terrible job and is getting worse, but there is good and bad in everything. Recently my daugt-in-law had to take a flt with a 3 yr.old. It was last minute and when she got to the gate they didn't have 2 seats together. the agent said ask around and have someone move so you can sit together.(She later said that she should have never gotten on with that so up in the air) Well, she got to her seat and she asked ,generally and politely , if anyone could switch.the child's seat was 2 rows behind hers. a nice man said ok. all of sudden the flt.atten.started screaming,"you don't have the right to ask a customer to move!!!"Sit down!! the man said i volunteered it's no problem. the flt.attend.said one more word and i have have you removed from this flt.to my daut.in law. She HAD to make this flt. A nice woman next to her son said don't worry I'll take care of him.Of course, the whole flt. she was looking back, a wreck. The sweet child was content as could be. She wrote letter on top of letter when she got home and never received a reply!!! I mean no disrespect to the profession,I have experience some wonderful service.
Please do not go four days without posting! I am from Maryland and I checked in (neurotically) daily waiting for you to post again.
I think you are hilarious
I can't say that I agree with the over the top wealth of the Osteens, i am not sure that making millions off of religion is right, but taht is not the issue here. This is the most ridiculous lawsuit. I want to know how having a hit to the breast gives you hemroids?!?!? I hope that this flight attendant gets put in her place by the judge adn jury.
I have had the same situation when my son was two and three years old. someone always moved on the plane, it was never a problem. No one wanted to listen to a crying baby. That was ten years ago, things have changed.
MS. BROWN'S LAWSUIT IS TOTALLY UNWARRANTED...WHERE DOES SHE GET THE NERVE TO DEMAND 10% OF SOMEONE'S NETWORTH. BROWN WAS NOT INJURED, DID NOT LOSE A LIMB, NOT IN A WHEELCHAIR, NOT BLINDED. PAIN AND SUFFERING GIVE ME A BREAK..NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OF THE OSTEENS, THEY ARE PUBLIC PERSONALITIES AND ARE POTENTIAL TARGETS FROM PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING FOR A FREE LUNCH.
Glad to see you're back posting!
I get so tired of people assuming because they've been wronged in some way (real or perceived) that they are due some cash.
Don't even get me started on people expecting to be left $$ after relatives pass on! Make your own money!
Is Ms Brown still a CoAir employee? I am surprised in the wake of high flying costs they would want the additional bad press
I heard on the news last night that she was.
OMG!!!!!.............."asking for 10 percent of Osteen's net worth"......."lost her religious faith and suffers from hemorrhoids"......Please don't tell me the courts in any country, especially this one, would ever honor those claims. If Browm lost her faith over the actions of any preacher's wife then the only thing weaker than her faith was the walls of the arteries running around her anal orifice
When Brown looses this case, she should have to pay all of Olsteens expenses including lawyer fees. This is the most rediculous suit I've ever read about!
Hemmorriods...yeah right! Lost her religion? She probably never had any!
Anxiety...yeah, filing a law suit is stressful esp based on such mute evidence.
This is a waste of the court's time, and tax payers money!
Where are Sheila Lee and Quannel X? They are so quick to run to those who are mistreated, especially if "they look like they do." And, Sheila could don her surgeon's mask as she did when marching through the HISD school which needed mold remediation. What a missed photo op for both of them.
I know the poor flight attendant could probably use their assistance, even if it were limited to their bringing her some preparation H!!!!
Hey rajn where you from? You are funny.
Down da bayou, cha....
Raceland, LA
It does sound frivilous, KK, BUT, if one is going to be a part of ministry (and being married to a famous minister does make the wife part of ministry), the bar is set much higher as far as behavior is concerned. Christ-like behavior is vitally important. For all the $$ the Osteen's have, I think Victoria could zip her lip and behave herself. I kind of feel about this the way I feel about celebrities who make zillions then complain about the paparazzi. Ms. Brown's lawsuit is probably ridiculous, but, on the other hand, I've heard that Victoria O is a total stuck-up bitch, too. Maybe she deserves it. Just a thought, and I certainly wouldn't be willing to take a stand, as I know only what I've read and heard, no facts whatsoever.
Even if the case were true, how did this particular flight attendant determine that this simple matter, which didn't involve any jail time or bodily injury that was recorded, have a value of 10% of Joel Osteen's worth? Could it be because she is a greedy, needy, self serving individual who was possibly on the way out from her job, with a greedy self serving lawyer who wanted the noteriety and half of whatever settlement was offered? Could it be because she was too caught up in the moment of "I'm saving the plane and pilot" that she refused to simply cooperate and wipe up the spill that shouldn't have been on the armrest of a first (or any other) class airline seat when passengers are boarding?
Maybe her lawyer is the same one that sued the dry cleaners for $10 million because they lost a pair of his slacks. Hmmmmmm.......Where's Quannel X when you need him?
Well I can't defend Victoria Osteen's behavior, as it seems plausible from the one time I met her and her husband. On the other hand, Ms. Brown does not seem to have lost any of her "faith". Clearly she either believes herself to be god (little g for her) as she is asking for her 10% tithe, or she has a love of money, which is the root of all evil. Anyone who loses faith over the actions of a man or woman, never truely had faith in GOD, but simply followed the teaching of "man". What a sad day when such a frivolous and wasteful lawsuit is allowed to be presented in our courts. Of Ms. Brown I can only say, "what a sad, strange little woman."
As for the hemorrhoids: Preparation H! And I might add, pulling her head out might also help.
It's not that well know, but hemmohroids can be transmitted. You've heard of "Typhoid Mary"? Well, meet "Hemmohroid Vicky" !
I doubt Jerry Seinfeld could write a more funnier episode of Seinfeld.
This whole thing is hilarious.
Quite frankly, airline service has taken a nose dive. After going through the hassle of getting to the airport three hours early, then waiting for the two hour late flight, and getting a dirty seat, think I might experience a little "air rage". I mean, the least I would expect for my money was a clean seat. That is not being arrogant. I find against Ms Brown and order her to pay court and attorney fees. Dismissed.
What a waste of our tax money.
As a flight attendent your job is to make the customer happy! Mrs Osteen was not happy with the liquid on her seat, and at the price she paid for that seat it shouldn't have any liquid on it. If this was at boarding time that meant the plane had just been serviced soooooo.... the flight attendant should have cleaned up the mess. (It's her job) Was Victoria wrong to get upset maybe, maybe not. I was not there to see what happened or the reaction of the flight attendant. I have flown enough to know that some flight attendants are snotty and rude. Some even act as they are doing you a favor by doing what is expected for jobs.
I predict that Rusty puts Joel on the stand and in turn, Joel asks the entire jury to hold hands and pray
I KNEW IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THEY PLAYED THE RACE CARD!!!!!!!!!!!
I am shocked the Osteens hired Rusty Hardin - after the Arthur Anderson debacle and the Roger Clements screwup --
I would have hired RACEHORSE HAYNES!!!
If Ms. Brown was on company time at the time of this incident and "suffered" hemroids and loss of religion along with a hurt breast, why is she suing and why did it take her months before she filed suit or why didnt she just file for workmans comp? Why didnt she press charges? Why 10 percent of Mrs. Osteens net worth? This is a money sucking woman. I hope she loses and embarasses herself.
I found your blog from CNN
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/08/07/osteen.wife.trial.ap/index.html
very witty blog. i will be back
So if Ms. Brown DOES win, to what charity will she be donating her award amount? I mean, after all...this lawsuit is not about money, right?
Considering the fact that Ms. Osteen has all of her money from swindling and taking advantage of millions of Christ followers who do not have much money and the fact that she felt superior enough to treat a flight attendant the way she did, I would say that she is no different than the Pharisees in Jesus' day. And we all know how much patience Jesus had for them. I think she should have to lose something important enough to make her question what kind of witness she is for the sake of the cross.
Wow, this is a shakedown. Look in to Brown's litigious background.
This is not the first time she has done this.
so what is the latest on the case? I didn't watch the news last night, took my boys to the movies to see Hellboy II which was awesome.
The Chronicle has a pretty good article on the case.
