Happy Birthday Big Daddy!

Today was my incredibly handsome husband John's birthday! We celebrated really low-key with all the kids and a few of his closest friends. Daniel and his fiance Veronica grilled a beef tender and made (the most amazing) lobster risotto. Mary Caswell whipped up a melt in your mouth birthday cake. A fun night was had by all!

There never seems to be room for Mommy.....

Last night after working on my blog - I got ready to come to bed only to find the usual cast of characters....the dogs, Clementine and Oliver; the kitty, "Oscar Wyatt" and Sinclair snuggled deep into her Daddy's warm back. I couldn't pass this photo opportunity. The snoring patterns sounded like a machine shop on the ship channel!

WHERE HAVE ALL THE LEADERS GONE????

As I was going through the daily rituals of sorting the mail Sinclair gets very excited over the boxes. The new book by our friend, Lee Iacocca wrote arrived and Sinclair immediately sunk her teeth right into it. It maybe an early prediction but she liked it so I am sure it will be a NYT bestseller!
Obviously his book inspired her.... immediately afterwards she attempted to take her first steps!

I have known Lee personally for over 17 years -- here is some of the things he shares
Lee Says:

"Am I the only guy in this country who's fed up with what's happening?
Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder.
We've got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we've got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can't even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say,
"Stay the course"

Stay the course? You've got to be kidding. This is America,
not the damned "Titanic". I'll give you a sound bite: "Throw all the bums out!"

You might think I'm getting senile, that I've gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore.

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs. While we're fiddling in Iraq, the Middle East is burning and nobody seems to know what to do. And the press is waving 'pom-poms' instead of asking hard questions. That's not the promise of the "America" my parents
and yours traveled across the ocean for. I've had enough. How about you?

I'll go a step further. You can't call yourself a patriot if you're not outraged.
This is a fight I'm ready and willing to have.

The Biggest "C" is Crisis !

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It's easy to sit there with your feet up on the desk and talk theory.
Or send someone else's kids off to war when you've never seen a battlefield yourself. It's another thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A Hell of a Mess

So here's where we stand. We're immersed in a bloody war with no plan for winning and no plan for leaving. We're running the biggest deficit in the history of the country. We're losing the manufacturing edge to Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care costs. Gas prices are skyrocketing, and nobody in power has a coherent energy policy. Our schools are in trouble. Our borders are like sieves.
The middle class is being squeezed every which way These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you've got to ask: "Where have all the leaders gone?" Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense?
I may be a sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?
We've spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Name me one leader who emerged from the crisis of Hurricane Katrina. Congress has yet to spend a single day evaluating the response to the hurricane, or demanding accountability for the decisions that were made in the crucial hours after the storm.

Everyone's hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping it doesn't happen again. Now, that's just crazy. Storms happen. Deal with it. Make a plan.
Figure out what you're going to do the next time.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there could ever be a time when "The Big Three" referred to Japanese car companies? How did this happen, and more important, what are we going to do about it?

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the debt, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at
our country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the gang in Congress. We didn't elect you to sit on your asses and do nothing and remain silent while our democracy is being hijacked and our greatness is being replaced with mediocrity. What is everybody so afraid of? That some bonehead on Fox News will call them a name? Give me a break. Why don't you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough?

Hey, I'm not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I'm trying to light a fire. I'm speaking out because I have hope I believe in America.
In my lifetime I've had the privilege of living through some of America's greatest moments. I've also experienced some of our worst crises: the "Great Depression", "World War II", the "Korean War", the "Kennedy Assassination", the "Vietnam War", the 1970s oil crisis, and the struggles of recent years culminating with 9/11. If I've learned one thing, it's this:
"You don't get anywhere by standing on the sidelines waiting for somebody else to take action. Whether it's building a better car or building a better future for our children, we all have a role to play. That's the challenge I'm raising in this book. It's a call to "Action" for people who, like me, believe in America It's not too late, but it's getting pretty close. So let's shake off the crap and go to work. Let's tell 'em all we've had "enough."

THE DAY DADDY AND I RECEIVED A BERLITZ COURSE IN PULLING UP.....

Yesterday, my amazing girlfriend, Ryland (aka "JAMP's Mommy") and I hosted a playdate. In typical Mommyzilla fashion, we had a caterer make all our favs: crabmeat in avocado and southern chicken salad, fresh strawberry and cream cake, fragrant orchids and lots of games/videos on hand. Keep in mind, my little Princess was born a month-plus early so she is a few weeks behind on the rest of her group. JAMP, of course is studying for the LSAT in his spare time - he is really advanced. Then her other "squeeze" Fayez, is a year old, so he is leading by example. As you can see, this child had a full head of gorgeous curls and looks like he will be ready for braces soon! We are so jealous since we do not have teeth and only some golden peach fuzz, to speak of.
watched all the babies yesterday in awe recalling what seems like yesterday we were all "with child" - we were in deep discussion among the other mommies talking of different stages or mini offspring were progressing, various products we loved using and how many cheerios our babies ingested on an average day.My daughter is VERY long for her age (even being a preemie she is easily as long as any 18 month old). One Mom asked me "How long has Sinclair been pulling up?" I said "she doesn't yet, but she just crawled for the first time in Ecuador this past weekend, she will gain a lot this month"I inadvertently must have reiterated this story to my husband in front of our daughter before she went to bed. Sinclair went to sleep last night our little 8 month old Princess that crawls a few steps and then rolls, no pulling up - no standing. We are extremely proud of her little skills - alas, she decided to work on her technique at 4 AM today and pulled up and crawled out of her (standard size) iron crib. John and I awoke to blood curdling screams and we rushed to find her sitting up in the floor wailing. After we caught our breath and realized Child Protection Services were not going to show up SWAT style and haul us away, we gathered her up, dried her tears and put her in bed with us, where she slept peacefully. John lowered the crib six inches and it is good to go until the next growth spurt! After all the brouhaha settled, Sinclair got a bottle and a few puppy licks from Oliver, she was very content pulling Dad's chest hairs. As if pulling up was not enough excitement for the past few hours. She looked at her Dad and I and clearly said "Hi, Dad-dee" John and I looked at each other with eyes the size of the rims on my Escalade. "Did she just say what I think she said?" She then teased us and said it AGAIN three more times!!!!!!!!! Dad was so proud and I was deflated! Kidding, I was proud too! Daddy fixed the crib, so he deserves the accolades!

HOME OF THE PANAMA HAT AND TRUE LOVE....

This weekend the family ventured to Guayaquil, Ecuador with Daniel and Veronica to bless the rings for their upcoming nuptials in October. After arriving in Guayaquil and spending an evening adjusting. We departed the following day for their majestic beach compound three hours South in Las Tunas. MY HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED

Towards the end of my pregnancy I became very nervous about meeting our new daughter. I was worried that we would not "bond" like I the fantasy plays out. I wrote about this in my journal. Fortunately, it did work out exactly like you hear. The moment I laid eyes on her I realized she was all we ever dreamed we wanted. Below is a few pages from my journal written from hospital bedrest in July 2006.

Do you believe in love at first sight? I didn’t even fall in love with my husband until our first real date ….and believe me he would be the most popular (and gorgeous) man in prison. That was only what seemed like last week and now five years later we are all one big happy family! We are a modern day blended Brady bunch. Yes, it works for us and I love it! We have been so blessed! We have an amazing warm and loving home, a child on the way and already searching to make more closet space. I love my husband, Hailey, Daniel and my growing family more than I could have ever imagined I was capable. But somehow the media, well-meaning people and every Sandra Bullock movie ever made have drilled into our heads that this mythical ideal of instant love is better. And this is no truer than when it comes to mother-baby love.

During my pregnancy people constantly assure me that I will feel this incredible, overwhelming love for my baby, like nothing I have never experienced (clearly most of them have never been overserved on cheap booze) the very second my daughter is placed in my arms. They say that whether you are scared and ill prepared or excited and impatient to be a parent, you will experience this deep unfathomably profound bond immediately.

I compare the feeling with unboundaried pressure and high expectations. I compare it to a date on Match.com up until meeting you have a rough idea of height and weight and a fuzzy photo to work from. I can imagine being induced with more drugs than Robert Downey Jr and credentialed Doctors hand you a baby while you are high. So much for first impressions.

I read the pregnancy websites there are women who report feeling madly in love with their babies the second they lay eyes on them. These women are lucky, lying or just needy – I don’t trust them. These are the same women that keep minute by minute scrapbooks, bank core blood, eat placentas and name their babies “Apple” Then again, maybe they are the normal one, but they are awash with raging hormones and class 3 narcotics. I have a sneaking suspicion a lot of them go on to home school. But, that said, good for them.

The majority of my friends assure me bonding takes time. You have to get to know each other. Go slowly. It probably does not help I have read that before introductions are properly made the little one is already sucking your breast two minutes into your relationship. Already getting to second base! I have read babies are very forward with their needs. Actually, it is refreshing – no games….just the basics.

Personally I am fully expecting to take one look at my baby and feel the kind of blinding maternal love you only see in Lifetime movies. I attribute this to a year of raging hormones or a study I read at www.whattoexpect.com said when you give birth, a chemical called oxytocin pumps through my body. Not to be confused with Oxycontin – but think how great that would be? This hormone is supposed to be so strong it brings out the mothering instinct in Martha Stewart.

Since I became obsessed with this bonding issue (yes one of the many things I am driving my sweet husband nuts over) the study says that as you care for your baby and you begin to bond you body produces a compound called Dopamine. This is a chemical that triggers the reward center of your brain, sort of like nature’s heroin. When the chemical is released it causes you to become “addicted” to your baby. So I guess women that have 8 or 9 babies are “chasing the dragon” What if there is nothing like the initial high? According to similar studies I have found this hormone can be severely damaged by anxiety, fear and postpartum depression. So there are no guarantees you won’t hyperventilate from shock either. I am telling myself I didn’t like West Wing the first season either and now I cannot get enough.

SKIBO CASTLE...DORNACH, SCOTLAND

This was Sinclair's first trip to a real castle. Andrew Carnegie sure knew how to live! I am confidant that the steel baron had to have Pollock lineage, since Sinclair and I felt right at home at Skibo!

See what happens when you stay in Madonna's suite?? You start flashing your bum! Who's the Material Girl now?

Sinclair was thoroughly investigating Daddy's kilt...wondering "Daddy you wear Huggie's under that plaid dress?"

The afternoon walks were the most glorious part....

You would smile this big too if you were treated like a Princess in a castle!

WHERE HAS THE TIME GONE???

It seems like it was only last week I was pregnant with Sinclair....it surely does not feel like this time last year I was waddling around waiting for her to make her debut.

Now we have survived her arrival, the "shakes" have subsided and everyday is a new adventure

ONCE UPON A TIME....

If you have not figured out by now I am Kristi, wife of John, Mommy to Sinclair and “Stepmomster” to Hailey and Daniel. My gorgeous kind husband and I live in Houston, Texas with our cat “Oscar Wyatt” (like his namesake our kitty is fearless) and two tri-color Cavalier King Charles Spaniel dogs, Clementine and Oliver.I have been blessed with two incredible “bonus kids” (I loathe the word “step”). There is the charming and brilliant Daniel (24) who is engaged to be married this fall to the most stunning elegant young lady, Veronica. Then there is the hilariously funny and stunning Hailey (22) who is more like my little sister than anything else. I could not imagine life without our modern day Brady Bunch.

On July 11, 2006 I gave birth to the Princess of our brood, Kimble Sinclair. I don't even know where to begin in telling you how extraordinary she is. That's pretty much this entire website is about. So far this is a compulsion, far beyond my control.
Let's see, what to know about me. I love Hermes bags. I cannot live without my Blackberry or Tivo. My favorite food is seared Foie Gras. I relax by reading biographies or history. I despise parking lots, picky eaters and airport security. I am allergic to pepper and flying coach….actually the pepper part is true. My favorite place to visit is anywhere my family is. Actually I was one of the first bloggers ever in the history of the internet. I was a radio and television personality. The radio persona or Noms de Plum that was brought to life was “Lucy Lipps” This was on the cusp of the internet revolution (which began for me in 1993) during which very successful internet relationship advice column where I wrote the behind the scenes of my celebrity interviews. Many things inspire me daily beside my family. I like to know what motivates people subconsciously. A few things that fascinate me and immediately come to mind for me are: President George Bush; former President George Bush; Condi Rice; Andrew Carnegie; Oprah; Dr Hunter S. Thompson; Dr. Douglas Brinkley; Bill Clinton; Bill Gates; Jean-Georges; Arthur Elrod; John Lautner; Horatio Alger; Red Adair; Mae West; Emily Dickinson; Johnny Cash; Nancy Drew; Joel A. Rosenthal; John Galliano; Manolo Blahnik; John Singer Sargent; Bill O’Reilly; J. Edgar Hoover; Roy Cohn; drunks, introverts, geniuses; the unclassifiable; the impassioned; trust fund babies; the passionless; the daring; the theatrical; hobos; saints; rogues; silver-tongued devils; the baby whisperer; innovators; niche marketers; the remarkably efficient; the truly wholesome; grifters; walkers; gold diggers; the Forbes list; treehuggers; rubberneckers; “Spiderman” the homeless man by Memorial Park; old money; nouveau riche; blue-bloods; eccentrics; Mennonites; small town career politicians; film extras; palm readers; transgenders; pearl divers; cutting horse trainers; dismorphics; criminal defense lawyers; the beautiful people; the stuttering shy; missing links; Rednecks; nuns; Mongolian acrobats; cowboys; courthouse jailers; outcasts; fruit pickers; slum lords, sailors; fortune tellers; wharf rats; prison guards; Amish; Industrial debutantes; exaggerators; anyone who has worked on a shrimp boat; Princeton educated egg donors with a 1500 SAT; nonconformist; gypsies; the simply inbred; madams; aficionados; career dishwashers; aristocrats; cheaters; mistreaters; aristocrats; diplomats; libertines; drag queens and anyone in between!
