My best friend Melissa flew into Houston today (from her second "Sooner" home in Norman, OK) and we went and voted.
I was happy to do so. This is my God given right and civic duty.
I find myself troubled, though, because I have been challenged by some folks regarding my candidate of choice, John McCain.
I don’t like to be challenged. I don’t like to be tested. I realize that it’s important, sometimes, to submit to that, but there’s a deep part of me that wants people to realize that I have given so much thought to the issue — whatever the issue is — and my intentions are good. My support of McCain has been long-standing, although he was not my first choice, Rudy was.
I have though, been having some internal musings about the whole situation. Why do I support McCain? Is he the most conservative? No. Do I agree with all of his voting decisions and public stances? No. But, still, I support him.
I have come to the realization that I’m not as conservative as I once was. I have also come to the realization that my hopes for a president lie not just in what he represents, but in his leadership abilities. The ability to lead well is a HUGE issue for me.
In other words, I learned that, just because someone disagrees with me doesn’t make them wrong.
I’m NOT saying, “It’s all relative.” I don’t believe that. There are definitely areas of sin, and there are definitely areas of black and white. But, beyond that, there’s a whole lot of grey area shaded with opinion, translation, personal values, personality, personal history, personal convictions… and on and on.
I realize that he is not as conservative as some. But neither is he as liberal as perceived by some others. Republicans are cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Even if he’s “soft” on issues that some of us would rather he’d be hard on, he’s still, overall, had a very strong conservative record over the entire course of his political career.
In Arizona, he has a 19% disapproval rating, and that’s among Democrats and Republicans. The most conservative don’t approve (for reasons that seem ridiculous to me), and for more understandable reasons, the most liberal don’t approve. But other than that, by those who know him best, he has had a STRONG approval rating since he took national office in 1982. For 25+ years, he has proven himself as a strong leader who can get the job done. He runs his mouth, he ruffles feathers, he’s unafraid to have friends who think/believe differently than he does. But he’s a GOOD statesman. Regardless of what the most extreme would accuse him of, or hold against him, he has been a fantastic Congressman.
I wish he was vocally a little more supportive of 2nd amendment issues (though his voting record shows him to be pro-gun). I wish his economic policy was a little more clear. I’d like to know where he stands on US sovereignty issues (though, from his military and POW history, I can’t imagine him supporting any sort of North American Union or anything like that, but from what I can find, he hasn’t been really vocal about his beliefs on the matter). He does support the overturning of Roe vs. Wade, though why he felt differently for so long is beyond me. I also wish he was younger, but, oh, well.
I like his sense of humor. I like that he’s unafraid to speak his mind. I like that he’s tough. I value the fact that all seven of his kids have a good relationship with him; to me, that speaks volumes.
I think his is the face that should be turned to the world, saying, “We are Americans. We believe strongly in some really significant things, and we’re willing to back it up, but if you have some disagreements, I’ll probably listen to you. Some areas are non-negotiable, but I am interested in hearing you out.” Unlike Bush, he’s at least willing to listen to (most) others who don’t agree with him. AND, unlike Bush, he’s not really a “damn the torpedoes” kind of guy; he’s more willing to at least try to build consensus, even though he’s not always successful. Bush says, “This is what I’m doing, and I don’t care what anyone thinks, and I don’t care if anyone else is on board.” McCain says, “This is what I plan on doing, and this is why I think it’s a good decision; I’d like you to come along.” In my opinion, that’s better leadership, and we need a president who is a good leader, not just has good ideas. In every situation McCain has been in, for all of his life (at least POW-era and afterwards), he has proven himself to be a LEADER. That is VERY important to me.
I am very firm in my resolve of supporting McCain, even though he’s not perfect; I think he would be a fantastic leader of the American people, and a good statesman FOR the American people in foreign affairs.
So. Anyone still with me???
Please, exercise your right to vote. I’d be thrilled if you’d join me in support of McCain, though I would understand if you don’t; he’s not perfect. But, please, support someone (I’d be especially pleased if that “someone” was at least a Republican), and don’t just complain about the choices available, and PLEASE don’t cut off your conservative nose to spite your Republican face by saying you’d rather vote for Obama than McCain. That’s just stupid. In my still-not-so-humble blond Polish opinion.

I am with you. Rudy was my first choice too, I met him at the Avalon Diner, he is second cousin to my sis in law in D.C. I wish he would have not left the race... maybe next time. I support McCain, Obama is not a good choice.
P.S. I voted the first day of early voting, first time to early vote. Waiting in line for my right to vote was not a big deal.
I like the way you write about your politics, even if I don't share your viewpoints. Had to laugh when I got to your last sentence, because the whole way through I was thinking...Kristi, are you sure you're a blonde writing all this? Then you go and misspell blonde...lol! Steph
Blond (also spelled blonde, see below) or fair-haired is a hair color characterized by low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin. The resultant visible hue depends on various factors, but always has some sort of yellowish color, going from the very pale blond caused by a patchy, scarce distribution of pigment, to reddish "strawberry" blond colors or golden-brownish blond colors, the latter with more eumelanin.
great blog today maybe others will develop some compassion for the candidates and move forward together.
extremely well said and very inspirational

I am with you all the way. I am praying for a win next Tuesday.
MCCAIN/PALIN 08
Well said! I wish that more people would truly investigate the candidates. I think that they would surely vote McCain/Palin. I do not agree with everything McCain stands for, but I am pretty sure that would be the case with any candidate, afterall nobody is perfect. Thank you so much for writing something educated and not just throwing out a vote for McCain because he is republican post. I early voted yesterday and it was the first time I really felt like my vote was VERY important! I will be linking this post on my blog. Let me know if that is not ok.
My vote is for Obama/Biden, but this post really resonated with me. Despite my feelings about McCain and particularly Gov. Palin, you make some excellent points here. How thrilling to have such a historically significant election ahead of us!
Beat the Hell out of
Obama!
Gig 'em McCain
'08!
Stating from a t-shirt i saw in College Station... Gotta agree!!!!
The thing about this election that has bother me most is the fact that it has made everyone so devisive. Personally, I research issues thoroughly before casting my vote, rather than relying on smear campaign adds, etc. My point is, I wish people would respect ym choice rather than challenge it as though if I were more educated on an issue, I'd switch to their perspective. I'm a Conservative Independent by choice, not because of ignorance.
I voted for Obama but I like your style!
This is a column by Bob Herbert for the New York Times that I felt really stood out in the liberal vs. conservative debate--we so often demonize the other side without taking a nuanced look at what it is that people are actually accomplishing under the auspices of their party. I'm a registered Democrat, but I like to think I would have voted for Abraham Lincoln--similarly, however you generally identify, it's important to assess the qualities of the individual candidates, instead of resorting to old stereotypes. Bravo to you for speaking up so honestly and articulately!

Well said!
I agree, Obama has no experience, he is just a smooth talker.
I have voted and it was for McCain. I feel very alone in my views here in Austin where I feel like a blueberry in a bowl of tomato soup.
I hear ya (previous post)! I feel equally as alone as an Obama supporter here in Oklahoma. I'm sorry and I know how you feel. I, too, think that this campaign has been so divisive. However, I've felt this way for 8 years. I don't think it started with this campaign. I definitely research issues, and hate that this country has been divided into an --us/them, if you're not with me you're against me, if you vote for Obama you must also be aborting babies in your free time--kind of country. (On that last one, I objected to an ACORN video and someone question my values concerning the "sanctity of life" as though one h0ad anything to do with the other.
I can understand voting McCain (ok, not Palin though, I can't give you that) but Giuliani !! I'm sorry, I can't read this blog anymore. OK, maybe I'll read it. Is it OK if I just say I'm glad you didn't get the chance to vote for Giuliani :D
For you that have and will vote for Obama, I would like to know your reasons why. My observations have been that he says something different every day, he promises things he can never do and he sure talked down to Joe. I don't want someone who changes their plans and their amounts, so what is it anyway 250K, 200K, 120K, 150K, does anyone really know what Obama is going to do? I don't think he does.
Mr. Obama Not Eligible To Be President!
Is Obama Citizenship a Fraud? Is he a "Natural Born Citizen"?
A prominent Pennsylvania Democrat, Phillip J. Berg, filed a case in Federal Court on August 21st, demanding that Barack Obama produce evidence that he is a natural born citizen of the United States . Only a natural born citizen of the United States can serve as President. Sen. Obama could have put the matter to rest by producing a valid birth certificate. Instead, he and his lawyers fought tooth and nail to block access to Obama's birth records.
Here is a video of Philip J. Berg talking about his case:
See "October Surprise Obama Citizenship" NOW!
http://pmcms.rmcpac.com/video-page/obama-citizenship/
Since that video was recorded, the Federal Judge assigned to hear Mr. Berg's case, Judge R. Barclay Surrick, a Bill Clinton appointee, ruled that an ordinary citizen of the United States does not have the right to file a case in Federal Court to challenge the credentials of a candidate for President of the United States !
Why would a Federal Judge go to such lengths to protect Obama?
The Republican Majority Campaign is prepared to take legal action to require that Barack Obama produce a valid birth certificate to prove that he is a "natural born citizen" as required by the U.S. Constitution to be President.

Berg has now filed a request for an immediate injunction from the U.S. Supreme Court, to review his case before the election is allowed to take place.
Today's headline on WorldNetDaily is: "Constitutional Crisis Feared over Obama's Qualifications"
Evidence exists to substantiate the claim that Barack Obama is not a "natural born citizen" as required by the U.S. Constitution. His own paternal grandmother claims that she and two of Obama's half brothers were present at his birth in what is now Kenya, in 1961.
Forward this email to everyone!
If elected, Mr. Obama may be the first candidate to win the election and be constitutionally barred from taking office. This would be an electoral disaster of epic proportions. That is just one of many reasons why Barack Obama must be defeated on November 4th. If Barack Obama continues to refuse to produce a valid birth certificate, proving that he is a natural born citizen and he is elected by the voters, then the Republican Majority Campaign will have no choice but to legally challenge the fitness of Barack Obama to serve if elected. RMCPac will aggressively pursue every legal option to challenge the election and disqualify Mr. Obama for perpetrating election fraud.

Courts in Hawaii , a state controlled by liberal Democrats, have denied the public access to Obama's birth records by finding that the American people do not have "a tangible interest" in Obama's birth records. In addition, Barack Obama and his lawyers have stopped the release of his records at Columbia University , Occidental College, and Harvard Law School, all of which should include his birth information.
People hide the truth because it will hurt them. A candidate for President has an obligation to the American people to produce valid proof he or she is a natural born American citizen. This is what the American people want. Instead, we get nothing but stonewalling from Senator Obama and millions of Americans believe he is hiding the truth.
Senator Obama, we demand you produce a valid birth certificate that proves your birth in Hawaii . As a would-be President of the United States, you should provide a certified copy to every journalist who asks about it and to the Courts and plaintiffs in all the lawsuits seeking it. You must make the original available for inspection by any expert or news agency. Come clean and end the speculaton!
We must not let this issue corrupt, compromise or destroy the Constitution just because Senator Obama and the media want him to win the election.
Why won't Senator Obama produce a valid birth certificate for the court?
Why is the media silent on this issue?
In the absence of valid proof, the only logical explanation is that Barack Obama cannot produce evidence that he is a "natural born citizen" as required by the U.S. Constitution to be President.
The Republican Majority Campaign will pursue this case, after the election if necessary, to legally require that Barack Obama produce a valid birth certificate proving that he is a natural born citizen. RMCPac will aggressively pursue every legal option available to prevent Senator Obama from perpetrating election fraud.
We need your help and donations to get the truth before the American people before election day. Send this email to everyone you know and have this video viewed.

Do not buy the lies, DO NOT STAND BY and watch as your freedoms are taken
away!
I am SO excited to vote tomorrow! This is my first election I'm able to vote in. My roommates and I are all going together. I am glad you mentioned it on your blog. It IS our civic duty to vote! we should feel blessed to have the right to vote. there are places in the world that don't even get to pick their leader!
I have lurked on your blog for quite sometime and am always thrilled by the scintillating conversation. I only wish I had this much traffic on my blog....but I am bad to take long breaks from posts so I guess that would be my fault! LOL
Thank you for your insight. I, too, am a McCain/Palin supported and was disappointed when they didn't come through with a victory, but I am an American, I will continue to salute the flag, I will continue to respect those in office even though I disagree with most of them, and I will encourage my high school students to dig deeper and get the facts before making any decision. I have challenged my group of seniors to come back to school and let me know they have voted in 4 more years! It's our God given right, and because I know God is on His throne, I will exercize that right!
Keep up the good work!
I realize this comment is post-election, but I wanted to note something interesting I learned in a political science class. Although Congress's approval rating is as low and, in some polls, lower than Bush's, over half the Congressmen had a 60% or higher approval rating in their districts with most of them having the same 80% John did. Now, this is the information given to me by a professor, so I guess I can't speak to its accuracy myself. But, basically he said that most people disapprove of Congress, but somehow think their man or woman is exempt. I thought that was interesting.
